I can’t even explain how excited I am about this next inspirational brainstorm… my son’s VINTAGE SPORTS ROOM with a cool industrial vibe! My mind is racing with all of the creative possibilities for his personal space in our farmhaus. Kids themed rooms are some of my all time favorite rooms to design! As soon as my kids were old enough to form opinions about the decor in their rooms… I jumped at the opportunity to design a room that embraced their personality. It is a personal expression of who they are and I wanted to support those feelings by creating a special retreat of their own. The design for my son’s room was completely and totally inspired by his love of sports.
When designing my son’s nursery I chose neutral decor. I didn’t want to create a space that pushed him into an area that was inorganic to his internal desires. For example, I didn’t include sports in the design in case he did not enjoy sports, or a car room just in case he had no interest in cars. His nursery was a neutral pattern with various shades of blues and browns. In fact, I spent my entire 20th week of pregnancy carefully and deliberately painting stripes on his wall that matched his crib bedding. Don’t even ask how much it pained me to pain over that Michelangelo!! Brother! Overall his nursery was a generic boys room, and that was exactly how I wanted it!
As he grew older, he started getting into dirt bike riding and Santa brought him a brand new motorcycle for his third Christmas! By his fourth birthday he had long outgrown his nursery and it was time for a little boy room. Naturally, he chose a motorcycle theme! This is when designing his room got more interesting! He told me his favorite colors were oranch (spelling intended… that was precisely the way he pronounced it and it still makes me smile!) and blue. I took my son’s color choices and his theme and ran with it! I had a blast decorating his orange and blue motorcycle room with diamond plate accents. It was cool and hip and perfect for him!
Now that he is nearly eight years old and will be nine by the time we move into the farmhaus it is time to change his decor up a bit. I wanted a theme that could grow with him but really wanted HIS thoughts on this special space. While he still loves riding his dirt bike, he has found a true passion for sports. We brainstormed a couple of ideas but the end result was clear…. he LOVES sports… ALL SPORTS! BINGO! A vintage themed sports room with an industrial edge screams masculinity and fits this child to a “T”! I couldn’t wait to get started with a plan!
The following is a layout of his room with an ensuite bathroom.
Some of the key design features I am going to highlight for his sports room is an industrial bed, fun ceiling fan, metal lockers to store all of his gear, a sliding barn door for his closet, hip sconce lighting for his vanity, and masculine colors for his shower area. So let’s get started!
First, let’s talk beds! I think beds are the single most important piece in a bedroom. I don’t know about you, but when I simply make my bed.. my whole bedroom transforms! I knew the moment he said sports that I was going to put an industrial spin on this room starting with a masculine bed. I am loving the cool vibe these fabulous beds give industrial spaces…

What would a sports themed room be without some amazing metal lockers? I am searching for a rustic set of vintage lockers for his space. I also need these lockers to be functional as my son will use them to sort all of his various sports gear. So far this kid has enjoyed soccer, baseball, basketball, lacrosse, and is gearing up for football in the fall. Needless to say… we need an organizational space to store all of this gear! I am drooling over these pieces and have already started my hunt…
My son is a human heater and I just love cuddling with him on the couch! I am praying he will always be willing to cuddle with his mama! With that said he is in desperate need for a ceiling fan for our hot California summer nights! The following are a collection of ceiling fans with a chic industrial twist.

Moving over to the ensuite bathroom I want to create a bold, masculine sink vanity. I have yet to find exactly what I am looking for… so I think I am going to have to build it! My hubby is going to LOVE this idea! Hee Hee… I’m always keeping that man busy with my wild ideas! So here is what I am thinking…
I want a thick concrete counter top with a molded sink… like this…
I will center up a large molded single sink in the middle of the vanity creating flat counter spaces on either side of the sink. I LOVE this dark grey concrete color and think it will be a perfect complement to the metal and wood accents around the room. I want open shelving under the sink exposing the cool industrial piping that support the sink and faucet.
On the wall above the vanity I will center a mirror with two sconce lights on either side. Oh man… I have found the coolest industrial sconce lighting ideas from BuildIt.com.

- Old Silver Conduit 2 Light Industrial Wall Sconce with Wire Cage

To finish out the vanity area I will be placing a sliding barn door at the entry of his closet. This barn door will be functional as well as a work of art showcasing fun industrial hardware. The following are some barn doors that I think would work perfectly in this space! Now if only I could narrow down my choices!! This is going to be tough!
Last feature I am focusing on in my little man’s room will be his shower. Since the shower is in a relatively small room I am going to use a glass shower enclosure that extends to the floor to maximize the feel of this small space. In keeping with our industrial theme, I am going to have a black frame on the shower enclosure. Here are some spectacular shower enclosures I have found…
I think my little guy will be able to relax and revel in his masculine, vintage, industrial vibin’ sports room for years to come! I can’t wait to get started… I just LOVE a good theme room!
