After years of searching for the “perfect” lot we finally found our happy place! When we started the search our children were still young. I was not picky about location, rather looking for a spot that would check off all of the things on our “needs” list and most of the things from our “wants” list. If you are considering looking for a lot to build on, I highly recommend creating a list of “needs” and “wants”. Your “needs” list would include anything you absolutely can’t live without and your “wants” list would include anything that you would like to have, but isn’t all together necessary.
We searched all of the neighborhoods in our area. Since my newborn son loved to sleep in the car I would drive around for an hour or two while he napped looking through all of the neighborhoods in our area. There were so many hidden treasures out there I never knew existed. I narrowed my search to a few different areas, then just waited and watched to see when lots in those areas came on the market. Unfortunately, this process took a VERY long time. As time grew… my “needs” list seemed to change. My children grew older and all of the sudden school came into play. Keeping my kids at their same elementary school became one of my number one needs. This narrowed our search to dramatically, but also helped us pinpoint certain parcels of interest. We waited for these lots to appear on the market. One day one of the perspective lots on our search list appeared on the market.
We loved the lot! It was the perfect size and in a wonderful location. We immediately called the realtor and asked for more information. Much to our dismay the lot had a few issues…but let me tell you…they almost all have quirks! We would go and visit the lot to assess what it would take to renovate and begin to build. Thank goodness my contractor hubby knows all about these sorts of things. As we would stand on the lot, I would gaze over at the empty lot across the street. As we unveiled more intricacies of the current lot of interest…. I started to fall in love with that lot across the street. My husband would catch me day dreaming about the other lot and I finally told him my true desire was to be across the street. After a couple of months of research on how we could possible salvage the current lot, we decided to let it go and see what we could find out about the lot across the street. OH MY…back to the drawing board!
Then it happened….ON MY BIRTHDAY! The lot I had been dreaming about came on the market…yes, I do believe in divine intervention! I immediately asked my husband to inquire about the lot and promised him I would be perfectly fine with getting dirt as my only birthday gift this year! I mean… what girl doesn’t want a good piece of dirt for her birthday? Ha Ha! I am not going to romanticize this process… it took a long time! This lot had it’s quirks and we had to file extra paperwork to make my birthday wish come true! As each day of the four month process passed, I grew more anxious.
Please forgive the post workout selfie…my husband called me on my way home from the gym and asked me to meet him at the lot. I thought I heard disappointment in his voice and I was unsure of why he wanted me to meet him there. Upon my arrival he revealed the exciting news… we had FINALLY closed our dream lot!
This lot fulfilled my “needs” of being inside the school boundary and was the perfect size for us.
As for my “wants”… well it surpassed much of the list! It is located on a very quiet cul-de-sac… well at least it is quiet now… just wait until the compressors and nail guns start a blazin’! The lot has a gentle slope which means there is a good possibility we will be able to build our dream ONE story home. It is extremely close to a trial head… the hubs and I are trail fanatics! This spot just happens to be in the same neighborhood as the home in which we currently live so checking on the progress will be extremely convenient.
My #1 favorite thing about this happy place is that IT HAS A LAKE VIEW. I am not sure if it is the Aquarius in me, but I completely drawn to water. It makes me feel at peace and calm. I have had dreams of being able to see the serene lake view from my home since we are fortunate enough to live by a large lake. This view was definitely on our “wants” list, but I am beyond excited that this lot checked that special box.
Stay tuned… we are just getting started building My Modern Farmhaus!
